Rigid-Flexible Printed Circuit Boards
The ‘3-dimensional PCB’ – Rigid-flex boards are a hybrid construction. They consist of rigid and flexible substrates, which are permanently laminated together into a single structure. This technology offers a wealth of opportunities and the demand is increasing.
Rigid-flex boards are the perfect solution for difficult conditions with limited space. The 3-D design has many advantages. Rigid parts of the board hold the components securely. Flexible elements connect the parts inseparably. Plug connections and cables become redundant. The whole assembly is designed in a flat and compact way; the weight can be reduced.
There are different ways to manufacture a rigid-flex PCB:
- symmetrically with inward flexible layers
- asymmetrically with outward flexible layers
Advantages of the rigid-flex technology at a glance:
- A higher reliability due to the lack of plugs and cables.
- 3-dimensional design.
- Quicker installation.
- Cost savings because no connecting parts are needed.
- Electrical safety.
- Reduced weight.
